Quarter overview

Quarterly earnings analysis

01

Q1 FY27 consolidated revenue rose 14.3% YoY to ₹60,794 crore and EBITDA increased 25.3% to ₹9,370 crore. Reported PAT rose 18.8% YoY to ₹2,385 crore.

02

Sequentially, however, revenue, EBITDA and PAT all declined from Q4 FY26. The contrast between YoY growth and QoQ moderation is why both comparison periods matter.

04 · Pressure points & risks

What is not going smoothly

Netherlands TSN Regulatory Uncertainty

Receipt of an unspecific permit revocation intent letter from local environmental agencies regarding Coke and Gas Plants created a material uncertainty for TSN going concern disclosures.

UK EAF Infrastructure Bottlenecks

National Grid formally alerted Tata Steel of a delay in high-power electrical connectivity infrastructure required for the Port Talbot EAF project commissioning.

Operational Disruption at IJmuiden DSP

Temporary suspension of the Direct Sheet Plant (DSP) at IJmuiden due to emission observations resulted in lost production volume during the quarter.

05 · Management call deep dive

What management said on the conference call

Operating takeaways

11 key points
India Steel Demand & Macro Dynamics

India steel demand growth has been primarily infrastructure-investment led rather than consumption led. While automotive remains quite strong and passenger vehicles/two-wheelers do well, construction has experienced some slowdown due to labor shortages, and MSMEs are facing working capital pressures.

Kalinganagar & Ludhiana Expansion Ramp-up

The 5 MTPA expansion at Kalinganagar is complete, and the first scrap-based 0.75 MTPA Electric Arc Furnace at Ludhiana has been commissioned, though Ludhiana is operating at around half a million tons currently while ramping up.

Debt Onshoring & Reduction

Gross debt stands at Rs 92,382 crores and net debt at Rs 80,100 crores, with Net Debt to EBITDA down to 2.3x. Overseas debt has been reduced to 18% of total debt from 50% in 2020-21 via active onshoring, avoiding Rs 12,500 crores of additional debt from INR depreciation.

Consolidated & India Capex Plans

Consolidated capex was about Rs 14,000 crores in FY2026 and is intended to increase to around Rs 20,000 crores in FY2027, with more than 60% spent in India across downstream projects, coke ovens, sustainable projects, and NINL.

Q1 FY27 Realisation Guidance

Management expects Q1 FY27 realisations to be higher than Q4 by about Rs 6,000/t in India, £80/t in the UK, and €80/t in Netherlands.

Input Cost Pressures and Spreads

In Q1 FY27, coal consumption costs are expected to increase by $15/t in India and $10/t in Netherlands, while iron ore in Netherlands is expected to rise by $5/t alongside additional supply chain cost pressures from West Asia.

UK Safeguards and Operational Updates

UK deliveries reached ~2.2 million tons for FY2026. Proposed new safeguard measures effective 1 July 2026 propose a ~60% quota reduction and 50% tariff. EAF transition faces an approximate 12-month delay in electrical grid connectivity from National Grid.

Netherlands Operations & Regulatory Status

Netherlands liquid steel production was stable at ~6.7 million tons with deliveries at ~6.1 million tons. The Direct Sheet Plant (DSP) at IJmuiden faced a temporary suspension following emission observations, expected to restart soon. Coke and Gas Plants (CGPs) are being considered for closure due to age and strict environmental compliance.

Working Capital Efficiency

The company enhanced working capital efficiency and released around Rs 6,000 crores of cash during the year, particularly in India and Netherlands.

Downstream Portfolio and Value Addition Strategy

Downstream businesses including tubes, wires, colors, and tinplate achieved record sales. Management targets downstream volumes to reach 50-60% of total volume to insulate against commodity cyclicality, generating incremental 5-10% EBITDA over market steel transfer prices.

Logistics Consolidation via TMILL

Tata Steel is increasing its stake in TM International Logistics Ltd (TMILL) from 51% to 74% (with NYK holding the balance) to integrate rail, ground, and waterway logistics more tightly into its growth and supply chain strategy.

Important analyst Q&A

4 key points
Coke Plant Closure and Material Uncertainty in Netherlands

Analysts questioned the going concern material uncertainty flagged by auditors over TSN's Coke and Gas Plants. Management clarified that the uncertainty stems from the receipt of an environmental agency letter lacking definitive transition timelines, and while planned closure of the 40-50 year old CGPs will incur purchase penalties for replacement coke, it will also lower CO2 emissions and net out impacts.

UK EAF Electrical Infrastructure Delay

An analyst asked about the impact of delays in electrical backup for the UK EAF plant. Management confirmed a formal notice of a 6-8 month (or up to 12 months) delay from National Grid, and stated they are coordinating to establish partial connections for early trials to preserve project IRR and ramp-up schedules.

NINL Expansion and Capacity Pace

Management addressed queries regarding NINL expansion timelines and market share protection, noting that FEL3 is advanced, site preparation has started, FID is expected between July and September, and target commissioning is around 2029-30 for a 10 million ton site.

India Price Realisations and Long vs. Short Product Dynamics

In response to questions on pricing, management explained that the guided Rs 6,000/t increase in India for Q1 is driven by March-May domestic price movements and flat product export strength, whereas long products face some softness due to secondary producer working capital pressures and construction pauses.
