Start Before the Outcome
Trent had been listed for years before it became one of the market’s most discussed retail compounders. That is part of what makes the case interesting: sometimes the multibagger is not a new company but an old platform that discovers a dramatically better growth format.
Westside had already taught Trent how to design, source and merchandise predominantly own-brand fashion. Zudio took those capabilities into value retail, where the potential customer base was far larger and price points were sharper. The market did not need another generic apparel chain. It needed a format with fast merchandise turns, affordable fashion and store economics that could support rapid replication.
Westside Built the Hidden Capability
Private labels matter because a retailer controls more of the product economics and differentiation. Westside gave Trent years of experience in design, sourcing and merchandising rather than relying only on third-party brands. Those capabilities were not flashy, but they became the operating foundation for Zudio.
This is a recurring multibagger pattern: the capability that powers the inflection is often built before the growth becomes obvious. Investors who looked only at store count could miss the accumulated know-how inside the organisation. When a new format finds product-market fit, that know-how allows expansion to move much faster.
Zudio Found a Much Larger Runway
Value fashion in India sits at the intersection of rising discretionary incomes, urbanisation, social-media-driven fashion cycles and a consumer who wants variety without premium prices. Zudio’s proposition was simple enough to communicate and difficult enough to execute: fresh-looking fashion at accessible prices in stores that can turn inventory rapidly.
Trent then replicated the format aggressively. By 31 March 2025, it had 765 Zudio stores, including two in the UAE, alongside 248 Westside stores and 30 stores across other lifestyle concepts. In FY25 alone it opened 244 Zudio and 40 Westside stores. Expansion at that pace only creates value if new-store economics remain healthy, which is why productivity is more important than the headline count.
Revenue Followed the Format
Trent reported FY25 standalone revenue of ₹17,624 crore, up from ₹12,669 crore in the prior year. Zudio’s annual revenue also crossed the billion-dollar mark. The numbers reflected a business whose growth algorithm had changed: more stores, strong own-brand control and a broad value-fashion addressable market.
The important analytical question was whether growth came from discounting and inventory build-up or from genuine throughput. A retailer can manufacture revenue by opening stores; it cannot manufacture cash indefinitely. Investors therefore needed to watch inventory turns, gross margins, same-store trends, lease obligations and the pace at which mature stores generated cash.
What the Market Could Observe
Zudio stores were visible evidence. An investor did not need private channel checks to notice queues, product rotation and expansion into new cities. Store additions appeared in company disclosures. Westside had already demonstrated Trent’s private-label capability. The evidence gradually moved the thesis from “interesting experiment” to “repeatable format”.
This kind of opportunity rewards fieldwork paired with financial discipline. Visiting stores can tell you whether customers care. The statements tell you whether that enthusiasm creates attractive economics. Neither is sufficient alone.
Why Retail Stories Can Reverse Quickly
Fashion retail has low barriers to launching a store and high barriers to scaling one well. Trends shift, inventory ages, leases are fixed, and aggressive expansion can hide weakening store productivity. A high valuation magnifies the danger because the stock can fall even while the company keeps growing.
Trent’s lesson is therefore about format economics rather than momentum. The reusable signal is a retailer with differentiated sourcing, strong throughput, disciplined inventory and a format that works across geographies. If those indicators deteriorate, the historical multibagger label provides no protection.
Timeline
The Inflection Points
Read the sequence, not just the ending. The order in which evidence appeared is part of the lesson.
- Westside era
Trent builds a private-label-led department-store capability.
- Zudio emerges
A value-fashion format begins to create a new growth engine.
- Replication accelerates
Trent opens hundreds of stores as Zudio expands nationally.
- Scale achieved
765 Zudio and 248 Westside stores form a much larger retail network.

What Was Actually Knowable?
A useful way to study Trent is to pretend you do not know the ending. At each stage in the timeline, ask what evidence had actually improved and what still depended on hope. The point is not to find a historical chart that went up; it is to identify the small set of business variables that became more favourable before the eventual market re-rating.
For a present-day company that resembles Trent, the burden of proof should rise as the share price rises. Strong businesses can become poor investments when expectations outrun achievable economics. Recheck the thesis after every material change in growth, capital intensity, competitive behaviour or valuation. The historical winner is evidence that a pattern can work—not evidence that the next company displaying one piece of the pattern will repeat the result.

Signals That Made the Thesis Stronger
These are not mechanical buy or sell rules. They are evidence checkpoints you can reuse while studying another company.
A Proven Sourcing/merchandising Engine Being Reused in a Larger Format.
Why it mattered: this was evidence that the opportunity was becoming more repeatable, not merely larger. An investor would still need to confirm it in cash flow, margins or returns on incremental capital.
Store Expansion Accompanied by Consumer Pull Rather Than Only Promotional Push.
How to verify it: compare several years of disclosures and look for consistency between management commentary, operating metrics and the financial statements. One strong quarter is not a durable signal.
Private Labels Giving the Retailer Control Over Assortment and Economics.
What could fool you: competitors can copy visible features. The more important question is whether the company is accumulating distribution, customer habit, know-how or economics that become harder to reproduce over time.

What to monitor next: a genuine compounder should keep creating sensible reinvestment opportunities. If growth begins to demand disproportionately more capital, working capital or discounting, the old thesis may be weakening.

Questions to Put in Your Research Journal
- What exact capability allowed Trent to grow faster without destroying returns?
- Was the addressable market expanding, or was the company only taking temporary share?
- Did operating cash flow broadly validate the reported profit over a full cycle?
- Which competitive advantage became stronger as the company scaled?
- At the valuation available then, how much future success was already priced in?
- What observable event would have made you reduce or abandon the thesis?
The Lesson
Study the Mechanism, Not the Historical Return.
Trent shows why investors should look beneath a new brand for the capabilities that make replication possible. Zudio was new; Trent’s ability to source, merchandise and run own-brand retail was not. When an old capability finds a much bigger market, growth can inflect far more sharply than history suggests.
