What Growth Is Already Priced In?
Reverse-engineer the annual earnings growth needed for a target return when the valuation multiple changes. Explore how a lower exit P/E raises the growth hurdle.
Implied annual EPS growth—
Entry P/E—
Required end-year EPS—
Formula: required EPS = current price × (1 + target return)years ÷ assumed exit P/E. Implied earnings CAGR derives from current EPS. Excludes dividends, dilution, taxes and fees. Scenario mathematics, not a valuation opinion.

How to interpret this scenario
Calculate the annual EPS growth implied by a target share-price return and assumed exit P/E. Explore valuation compression without price predictions.
- Start with positive current earnings per share; this model is not suitable for loss-making companies.
- Compare lower and higher exit P/E assumptions. A lower valuation generally requires more EPS growth for the same target return.
- Dividends, dilution, taxes and transaction costs are excluded; a target return is not a forecast.
