Formula & Context
A Calculation Is
Not a Forecast.
How It Works
CAGR = (Ending value ÷ Starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1
Example
If ₹1,00,000 grows to ₹2,00,000 in five years, the CAGR is approximately 14.87% a year. The actual return in each individual year could have been very different.
When It Is Useful
Use CAGR when you have one starting value and one ending value over a known period. For investments with several deposits or withdrawals on different dates, XIRR is usually a more appropriate measure.

Frequently Asked
Questions.
These answers explain the mathematics and limitations. They do not assess whether a particular investment or strategy is suitable for you.
Is CAGR the same as annual return?
CAGR is a smoothed annualised rate between two endpoints. It does not show the actual return earned in each year.
Can CAGR be negative?
Yes. If the ending value is lower than the starting value, the calculated CAGR will be negative.
Can I use CAGR for SIP returns?
Not reliably when there are many dated cash flows. XIRR is commonly used for SIPs and portfolios with multiple transactions.
